Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland has derived its name from the Gaelic word ‘dubhlinn’ meaning ‘black pool’. The Liffey River runs through the beautiful city and hence you can find a number of bridges across its waters. Dublin is often hailed as one of the picturesque cities of the continent of Europe primarily due to its breath-taking settings.

It is interesting to note that Dublin was home to some of the world’s greatest literary figures such as George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift and James Joyce. In fact you can still trace the house in Dublin where George Bernard Shaw was born. Visitors throng to the place of Shaw’s birth in large numbers every year.

If you are interesting in watching Irish plays by literary giants then you must not miss the Abbey Theater or the National Theater. Dublin is home to one of the oldest cathedrals in Europe called the Christ Church Cathedral. This 10th century building was founded by the first Christian Viking king of Dublin. Visitors do not normally miss a trip to the Dublin Castle decked with two great towers. In fact it can be said that the Dublin Castle reflects the glory of the Middle Ages.

You can trace the growth and the history of the city if you visit the Dublin Civic Museum. It has a large collection of maps and other archeological details pertaining to the history of the land. Dublin Natural History Museum houses a wonderful collection of the species of Ireland comprising of varieties of animals. Irish literary heritage can be traced from the 8th century to the present times at the Dublin Writers’ Museum. You will come to know about the contribution made to the field of literature by the literary giants that hailed from this country by your visit to this museum.

Beer lovers revel at the visit to Guinness Brewery where you can get high quality beer produced from yeast strains. The city is home to some of the wonderful parks in the country of Ireland. Children enjoy visits to the St. Stephen’s Green and Phoenix Park. Stroll at the National Botanic Gardens should bring a lot of happiness to your mind. Dublin conducts the world-famous Horse Show in the month of August. Horse lovers throng the city in this month to have a look at the grand event. The city hosts Theater Festival too in the month of October.
